Report on performance

Scenario 2

The patient was a 40-year-old female who had a history of migraine-type symptoms, diarrhoea and nausea. She presented with a headache. The service provided was an MBS item 36, level C consultation.

Transcript of part of the discussion with the practitioner reads:

Chair Is it possible she could have a big right iliac fossa mass that she would not have noted?

Practitioner Anything is possible, but I wouldn't expect it with (patient).

Chair Okay.

Practitioner You can give me other patients, but sorry, you are talking about (patient)?

Chair Yes.

Practitioner And no.

Chair What prevents (patient) from developing a bowel cancer?

Practitioner Well, it was unlikely in her age group for a starter; secondly, she is straight enough to sort of think - to say, 'Gee, I think I might have bowel cancer.'. And I might say it is uncommon, but if you are worried about that, we will investigate it for you.
